Why Shopify revenue is not the same as profit
Revenue is a useful signal, but it is not an operating result. A store can grow sales while quietly losing contribution on every additional order.
Revenue is the starting line
Shopify reports what customers paid. Profit analysis continues through discounts, refunds, product cost, fulfilment, payment fees, taxes and acquisition spend.
The timing matters too. Refunds and advertising invoices often arrive after the sale, which makes a simple revenue view look healthier than the final economics.
Build one dependable definition
Choose a single profit formula, document it and use it across product, order and channel reporting. When teams use different cost assumptions, decisions become impossible to compare.
A useful operating view separates gross profit, contribution profit and net profit so a team can see exactly where margin changes.
Inspect the unit, not only the total
Store-level profit can hide products, countries or campaigns that destroy margin. Review contribution by product and order alongside the blended result.
